Barcelona had an eventful summer transfer window, but it was on deadline day that they witnessed the most drama.
The final day of the transfer window saw the Blaugranas incorporate Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix into their roster in two blockbuster loan deals.
The former will serve as Xavi Hernandez’s first-choice right-back this season and provides a set of strong tactical benefits over his existing options.
Felix’s role, meanwhile, is unclear. The Portuguese forward made his debut against Osasuna as a late substitute replacing Gavi, but the manager is still working out the best position for the youngster.
According to reports from SPORT, Xavi will meet with Felix soon to find the best role for him tactically. Further, he insists that the former Atletico Madrid star must ‘earn his place’ and is not a guaranteed starter.
Felix is a player who naturally thrives in the half spaces behind the centre-forward. On that front, he would fit in best on the left wing.
Alejandro Balde’s ability to play close to the touchline gives the team’s left winger the freedom to drift centrally. Such a style would suit Felix, although Xavi is reluctant to step away from his four-man midfield idea.
The 23-year-old has not lived up to his hype since his move to Atletico Madrid. His first spell with Los Rojiblancos saw him drown in a system that did not fit his style, forcing him to look for a way out.
He eventually moved to Chelsea on loan last season where he once again failed to set the world on fire. Barcelona could thus be his final chance to succeed in Europe’s elite.
Felix’s talent has never been in doubt, but it is high time he turns up the heat and puts it on display. One hopes that Xavi Hernandez helps him unlock his true potential.
