Xavi Hernandez could still be dismissed if Barcelona finish La Liga season in third

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez could lose his job if they do not finish out their final four games strongly. Xavi declared after defeat to Girona that his future would not be affected by the loss or their end to the season, and there have been reports that he still has the full backing of President Joan Laporta, but all bets could be off if things do not improve.

The Blaugrana need to gain at least two more points in their final four games against Real Sociedad, Almeria, Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla than Girona in their clashes against Alaves, Villarreal, Valencia and Granada in order to seal all second spot. If they do not do so, Diario AS it could plunge Barcelona into crisis. It would be considered as a failure, and could open the door to ‘new’ and ‘traumatic’ scenarios, with Xavi’s future no longer guaranteed. Second place is considered the minimum for Xavi to achieve.

It would also lead to Barcelona considering a fire-sale of top players. Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong would be invited to leave, as would Robert Lewandowski. The contract renewal of Sergi Roberto would be halted, Ansu Fati’s chances of returning to the club would diminish, and Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix would have their futures thrown into the air too. Even Pedri, previously considered one of the cornerstones of the Barcelona project, could be in the shop window.

They say only Fermin Lopez, Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Gavi would have their places assured, the threat being that finishing third could bring serious consequences to both coaching staff and payers. It’s a threat that means ‘all decisions’ have been postponed until the end of the season.

The promise that third place could bear severe consequences comes with one key issue – most of the players being discussed, as well as the coaching staff, have another year or more on their contracts.
