During the match, TV cameras captured Virgil van Dijk’s reaction to the referee’s decision. The footage appeared to show the Liverpool captain expressing his displeasure to match official Kavanagh.

Van Dijk seemed to inquire if the referee had been drinking, and his gesture suggested as if he were raising a cup to his mouth.

Fans watching the game were surprised by this interaction.

One fan shared on social media, “Swear van Dijk just asked the ref if he’s been drinking.” Another user commented, “Van Dijk’s just asked the ref what he’s drinking and not been booked for it btw.”

Another fan expressed their view, stating, “Van Dijk gets away with anything man running his mouth like that, Arsenal players would get booked immediately.”

Despite the gesture and verbal exchange, Van Dijk avoided being booked by the referee, despite directives from PGMOL chief Howard Webb to clamp down on dissent.

In a recent match, Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot received two quick yellow cards and was sent off for expressing frustration towards referee, Michael Oliver during a 0-0 draw against Liverpool.

However, in a separate incident, Darwin Nunez, while on a booking, sarcastically applauded the referee’s decision and did not receive a similar punishment.
