It has now been alleged that Daniel Levy wanted to pay just £1.5m of a £30m deal upfront to sign a striker for Tottenham.

The 62-year-old has earned a reputation for being a shrewd operator at Spurs.

Mirko Barisic – President of Dinamo Zagreb when Tottenham signed Luka Modric – once told a story about when he asked Levy for some Modric 14 Spurs shirts after the agreement, only for the man from Essex to deduct the price of those kits from the overall transfer fee, which pretty much sums it up.

He told FourFourTwo: “Levy gave them to me, but the invoice for the transfer, €23m (£19.8m), was minus the value of the jerseys. That was quite unbelievable to me. It showed me how to appreciate every penny a club spends.”

Now, a new story has emerged, as one player accuses Daniel Levy of spoiling his move to Tottenham by keeping a tight grip on the pursestrings at Spurs…

Saido Berahino shares how Daniel Levy angered West Brom

Saido Berahino is the player in question.

After the 30-year-old revealed on Wednesday that he was 90% close to joining Tottenham in 2015, the Burundi international has now expanded on what happened.

Berahino claims that Levy made an “unacceptable” offer despite agreeing to pay the £30m asking price, by attempting to cough up just £1.5m of the payment upfront.

The AEL Limassol No.9 wrote: “Right, Spurs payments was unacceptable and West Brom wanted 30mill. But levy would pay 1.5mill and the rest In instalment 😂😂”

Berahino has just scored 20 goals in the 2014/15 campaign at the time of this transfer saga – at the age of only 21 – so West Brom were entitled to demand £30m.

All ended well for Tottenham

While some fans might be annoyed to hear this, things turned out alright for Tottenham.

Levy eventually ended up signing a forward by the name of Heung-min Son in a £22m deal from Bayer Leverkusen, while Harry Kane also rapidly developed into one of England’s best strikers.

Of course, Berahino was also hot property at the time, and would have presumably been a success in N17 under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino, who helped mould Dele Alli, Kyle Walker and Kane into superstars.

Nevertheless, time has arguably proven Levy right.
