UEFA open disciplinary proceedings against Alvaro Morata and Rodri Hernandez

During Spain’s Euro 2024 victory celebrations, Alvaro Morata and Rodri Hernandez caused controversy by “re-claiming” Gibraltar – the pair proclaimed that the tiny island nation “was Spanish”, despite it being controlled by the United Kingdom.

Gibraltar’s Football Association did not take kindly to Morata and Rodri’s actions, and they reported the incident to UEFA. European football’s governing body have now decided to open disciplinary proceedings against the Spain stars, who have been charged with multiple rule breaches (via Sport).

Morata and Rodri have been charged with the following: violation of the “general principles of conduct”; “violation of basic standards of decent conduct”; “use of sporting events for non-sporting events”; and “discrediting the sport of football, and UEFA in particular”.

If they are found guilty, a ban is likely to follow. It could mean that Spain are without two of their starters for the beginning of their UEFA Nations League defence, which gets underway in September with matches against Serbia and Switzerland.
