Tottenham signs new six-year contract with Pape Matar

Tottenham Hotspur have secured Pape Matar Sarr’s services for an extended period, as the midfielder penned a new contract running until 2030. Sarr has notably become a standout player for Spurs this season, earning praise under the management of new head coach Ange Postecoglou.

The 21-year-old initially joined Spurs from Metz in the summer of 2021 but returned to the French side for the remainder of that season. He finally joined Tottenham’s senior squad for the 2022/23 season, making his mark after the winter break under Antonio Conte.

Sarr’s breakthrough moment occurred during Spurs’ Champions League last-16 tie against Milan in February 2023. In the absence of key players like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Yves Bissouma, Sarr paired with Oliver Skipp in midfield and performed impressively, despite a 1-0 loss at San Siro.

Postecoglou took a keen interest in Sarr upon becoming head coach, leading to the midfielder featuring in 18 out of Tottenham’s 20 Premier League matches this season. He started in 16 of those games and scored twice, showcasing his growing impact within the squad.

Internationally, Sarr was part of Senegal’s victorious squad in the 2021 AFCON, and he earned a call-up to their 2022 World Cup roster. He’s set to participate in this month’s AFCON after being named once again in Senegal’s squad for the upcoming tournament.
