Cristian Romero has lauded one of his Tottenham Hotspur teammates after the victory over Sheffield United on Sunday.

Spurs secured a fifth-place finish in the Premier League with a comfortable 3-0 win at Bramall Lane. It will see Tottenham return to Europe after missing out last season, with Ange Postecoglou’s men securing a Europa League spot.

A positive end to the season felt like a must for Spurs after a run of five defeats in their last six league games.

Dejan Kulusevski was at the double while Pedro Porro netted his fourth goal of the season.

There was also another improved display from James Maddison, who set up Kulusevski for his second of the afternoon.

Romero praises James Maddison after Tottenham beat Sheffield United

Maddison has endured a difficult few months at Spurs after making such a bright start to life in north London.

The England star completed a £40 million switch to Tottenham from Leicester City last summer and managed eight goal involvements in his first 11 league games.

It’s no secret that his form has dipped since returning from an ankle injury in January. But his more recent displays indicated he was getting back to his best and Cristian Romero was keen to praise his teammate after Spurs’ final day victory in Yorkshire.

Maddison took to Instagram and vowed that Tottenham will improve under Postecoglou next season.

He wrote: “It was important to finish the season strong. Assist, clean sheet and 3 points away from home in front of our unbelievable away support.

“We’ll be back better next year. COYS. Always.”

Romero left a comment beneath the post and labelled his fellow vice-captain as a ‘top player’.

Maddison’s impressive end to the season

There’s no getting away from the fact that Maddison’s dip in form came at the worst possible time for Spurs. But he certainly wasn’t alone in that regard and it ultimately led to Tottenham missing out on a top-four spot.

However, the 27-year-old’s improved performances may have gone slightly under the radar in recent weeks.

After dropping to the bench for the defeats against Chelsea and Liverpool, Maddison has impressed in Spurs’ last three games of the season.

Sofascore handed the playmaker a 7.7 match rating in the victories over Burnley and Sheffield United while he also picked up a 7.5 in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last week.

Maddison managed two assists in his last three games for Spurs this season, which was much more like the player who arrived nine months ago.
