Alhassan Yusuf emerged as one of the few bright spots during Nigeria Super Eagles’ uncertain beginning at AFCON 2023.
In his Nigeria debut, Super Eagles newcomer Alhassan Yusuf made an immediate impact, showcasing his prowess in a commanding midfield performance during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in the AFCON2023 opener on Sunday. The numbers clearly highlight his influential display.
While Nigeria faced a setback in their pursuit of a fourth AFCON title by dropping two points in the opener against Equatorial Guinea, there were still some positive takeaways from the encounter, providing a silver lining amid the disappointment.
In the midst of a stuttering and disappointing start, 23-year-old Yusuf stood out as one of the rare bright spots in Nigeria’s performance during AFCON2023. Notably, Yusuf received a late call-up to the Super Eagles squad as a replacement for the injured Wilfred Ndidi.
Yet, Yusuf’s performance against Equatorial Guinea has raised more questions for Jose Peseiro than the coach might have answers for. Making his debut, the Royal Antwerp player demonstrated a commanding presence in Nigeria’s otherwise lackluster midfield, covering every inch of the pitch during his time on the field.
