Barcelona has officially announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery for his back injury.
Despite hoping to avoid this step, the decision has been made, and Ter Stegen is anticipated to be out of action for at least two months, potentially impacting his participation in the Champions League knockout stages starting on February 13, 2024.
During Ter Stegen’s absence, Xavi will continue to entrust 24-year-old Inaki Pena, who has impressed in the last three games, notably in the recent 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Xavi commended Pena, highlighting his dedication and exceptional saves.
Pena, having signed a new three-year contract over the summer, will extend his role when Barcelona faces Girona, potentially playing in at least eight La Liga games if Ter Stegen’s sidelining persists for two months. Barcelona, currently four points behind Girona and league leaders Real Madrid, seeks to close the gap in their upcoming match.
