Ten-Man Atletico Madrid Secures Narrow Victory Over Sevilla

Atletico Madrid rose to the third position in La Liga on Saturday, securing a 1-0 victory against Sevilla even with 10 players in the last 20 minutes.

The match, originally scheduled in September but postponed due to storms, saw Marcos Llorente scoring the sole goal just one minute after entering the game as a halftime substitute.

Llorente seized the opportunity when Sevilla’s center back, Sergio Ramos, failed to clear a cross, and he fired a shot past goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic from an angle.

While some of coach Diego Simeone’s substitutions didn’t pan out as expected, the team secured a crucial win.

Substitute Caglar Soyuncu, who had come on for Koke just four minutes earlier, received a straight red card in the 70th minute for a challenge from behind on Lucas Ocampos. In response, Simeone made another substitution, bringing in defender Reinildo Mandava for Antoine Griezmann.

This decision left Griezmann, visibly displeased with being taken off, still tied with Luis Aragones as Atletico’s all-time leading scorer with 173 goals. Griezmann had arrived at the stadium wearing a T-shirt featuring the image of the late Aragones.

Despite finishing the game with 10 men, Atletico Madrid secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Sevilla, with Marcos Llorente scoring the decisive goal just a minute after coming on as a substitute at halftime.

With this win, Atletico climbed to the third position in the La Liga table, trailing leaders Real Madrid and second-placed Girona by seven points but edging ahead of champions Barcelona on goal difference. On the other hand, Sevilla concluded the year in 15th place, with just a three-point cushion over Celta Vigo in the first relegation spot.
