Spurs Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur Faces Extended Absence Due to Ankle Injury

Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur is expected to endure an extended spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury sustained in the team’s defeat against Aston Villa, TalkFooty reports.

Bentancur, making his first start since recovering from a torn ACL in February, had to leave the pitch after just 32 minutes following a contentious challenge from Villa’s Matty Cash.

Scans conducted on Tuesday indicate that Bentancur may face a minimum of two months in recovery. This setback compounds Spurs’ existing injury crisis, with several key players already unavailable, including Pape Matar Sarr, Richarlison, and others.

Amid concerns for Ange Postecoglou’s midfield options during the Africa Cup of Nations, where Sarr and Bissouma may be absent for a significant period in January and February, Spurs face a shortage in senior midfielders.

The only available senior midfielders are Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso, and the injured duo Maddison and Bentancur.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Postecoglou remains optimistic, stating, ‘It is just the situation we’re in at the moment, but we’ll get through it. It might take a little while, but we’ll get through it, and as long as we show the same intent and play the football we did today, I’ve got no doubt when we come out the other side, we’ll be a very good football team.’
