The director of the Saudi Pro League has confirmed ongoing discussions with Kylian Mbappe as he approaches the conclusion of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappe, who opted not to extend his current deal beyond the summer of 2024, was put on the transfer list by PSG, and Al Hilal’s €300m (£259m) bid was accepted. However, Mbappe expressed disinterest in a move to the Middle East at this stage of his career, abruptly ending the talks.
Subsequently, Mbappe returned to PSG, forgoing an €80m bonus tied to staying with the club for the season. While publicly stating his intent to remain with PSG for the current campaign, behind the scenes, he has reportedly made it clear that he won’t extend his contract further.
Real Madrid, long-term admirers of Mbappe, still aim to secure his services on a free transfer. Although Mbappe can engage in talks with overseas clubs starting January 1, SPL director Michael Emenalo has not ruled out another attempt to sign the 24-year-old.
When asked about the proximity of Al Hilal to signing Mbappe, especially considering their signing of Neymar in the summer, Emenalo said, “It’s never close if it’s not done. If it’s not done, it’s a huge chasm.
I can’t say how deep the conversation went, but there was an express interest that if he was ready to come, there was a club ready to make space for him.”
