Arsenal came out on top in last weekend’s north London derby as they continued their charge towards the Premier League title.

The Gunners hung on after nearly surrendering a three-goal lead against their bitter rivals and now go into the final few games still involved in the title picture.

For Mikel Arteta, winning at your biggest rivals is quite the way to go about pushing yourself towards a first title as manager.

What Mikel Arteta had put up in the Arsenal dressing room before facing Tottenham

The Arsenal manager has used some interesting methods over the last few years but it seems against Tottenham, it was about drilling home some simple messages.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Gunners boss made sure there was something pinned up in the dressing room for his Arsenal players to read.

It’s suggested in the report that hung up was the word BASICS, with a meaning under each letter for the Arsenal players to absorb.

Per The Athletic’s report, it’s suggested the following explanation for each letter.

“In Arsenal’s dressing room away at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend hung a banner emblazoned with the word “BASICS” in capital letters. Each letter represented a word written underneath: B for boxes, A for attack, S for shape, I for intensity, C for compete and S for set pieces. These are the fundamentals of Mikel Arteta’s side”.

Arsenal follow their manager’s lead

Within those six letters, two standout against Tottenham.

B for boxes, and S for set-pieces.

Arsenal made sure they punished Tottenham in both boxes with excellent defending and then even more brilliant attacking play, which in turn, came from brilliant set-pieces.

Simple messages like this can often be overlooked in modern football.

It looks like Arteta, then, got it spot on on this occasion and his Arsenal players fully took on board everything their coach wanted of them.
