Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has changed his mind on one of Spurs’ summer transfer targets.

The North Londoners officially missed out on Champions League qualification following their 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City on Tuesday.

The focus now will be on the summer transfer window, where Tottenham are expected to be very active. They have been linked with plenty of players, and there’s now an update on one of them.

Ange Postecoglou will want to change a lot of things in the summer transfer window.

The Australian was really annoyed after his side’s fifth defeat in six games on Tuesday, and he will surely make a few moves once the window opens in June.

Tottenham have been linked with about a dozen players since the turn of 2024, and one of them is Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno.

The 24-year-old has been of interest to Spurs since December 2023.

He is having a fine season at Torino and his performances have even earned him three caps for Italy. He is a quality player to have in the squad.

In the last week of April, reports revealed that Tottenham have opened talks to sign Buongiorno from Torino this summer.

It was claimed that the Serie A outfit want €35 million (£30m) for their talented defender, whose contract does not expire until the summer of 2028 [CalcioMercato].

Now, a new report claims Tottenham have made a U-turn.

CalcioMercato reveal that Tottenham were ‘convinced’ about signing Buongiorno just a ‘few weeks ago’, but it has been claimed that Postecoglou has changed his mind.

As a result, Spurs’ interest in the Italian has cooled down.

Buongiorno could solve two problems for Tottenham

Tottenham will almost certainly reinforce their defence this summer.

Spurs have a solid first-choice back-four of Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Destiny Udogie – the latter was the only Tottenham player in Danny Murphy’s Team of the Season.

The four of them are brilliant on their day, but Spurs lack quality backup options if any of them become unavailable due to injury or suspension.

Udogie’s absence in recent weeks has really cost Tottenham – they’ve won just one game since he picked up his season-ending injury in April.

Postecoglou moved Van de Ven to left-back and deployed Radu Dragusin in the Dutchman’s position against Manchester City on Tuesday. Both players had a decent game, but Spurs still ended up losing.

If Tottenham change their mind again and sign Buongiorno, the versatile Italian will not just provide cover at left centre-back but also at left-back.

That would solve two key issues for Postecoglou, which is why we think he would be a decent signing for the Noth Londoners.

However, if Spurs have cooled their interest in Buongiorno, they have perhaps identified someone else of a similar profile.
