Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his squad.

Spurs were flying high for much of the season, but their form has deserted them in recent weeks and now fifth is probably as high as they’ll finish.

Postecoglou hasn’t had a bad season by any means, but there’s certainly work to do to ensure Tottenham can last the distance next term.

Spurs have been linked with a number of players in various positions, with the whole squad benefiting from additional strength in depth.

Now, a report from Italy has claimed that Tottenham could be looking to blow their transfer rivals out of the water in pursuit of a ‘remarkable’ £35million defender.

The player in question is Torino’s Alessandro Buongiorno, one of the most highly rated defenders in Serie A over the past few seasons.

Calciomercato have spoken about the ‘strong interest’ from Tottenham, claiming Spurs will ‘try to burn off the competition’ by joining the auction.

The price tag for Buongiorno is said to be €40million (around £35million), a fee which fellow suitors Inter Milan may not be able to reach in one go.

Apparently, the Nerazzurri would require numerous conditions to make that investment, such as splitting their payment in several instalments.

With that in mind, Tottenham could well have an advantage over the newly-crowned Serie A champions thanks to their financial muscle.

Who is Tottenham Hotspur target Alessandro Buongiorno?

Buongiorno is a 24-year-old defender and a boyhood Torino fan who joined their youth setup aged seven.

The 6ft 3in defender took in loans at fellow Italian clubs Carpi and Trapani before returning to Torino in 2020/21 and becoming a regular.

Buongiorno has made over 100 appearances for Torino and has been lauded for his reading of the game, aerial prowess, aggressive play and threat from set pieces.

Football Talent Scout‘s Jacek Kulig has described him as “one of the most underrated players in Italy”, “one of the most interesting centre-backs in Serie A” and a “remarkable” player.

Tottenham have struck gold many times in the Italian market in recent years, with the likes of Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur all doing well.

Let’s see whether Buongiorno will be the next top talent to make the move from Italy to Tottenham.
