Tottenham are now set to make an offer to sign a defender who has been compared to Paolo Maldini.
Ange Postecoglou seemingly wants further reinforcements in his defensive department following the January acquisition of Radu Dragusin – after a tough end to the 2023/24 campaign which saw a number of square pegs shoved in round holes.
For example, Oliver Skipp – a natural central midfielder – ended up filling in on the left of defence.
So, who are Tottenham preparing a bid to sign? Let’s take a look…
Tottenham ready to make Andrea Cambiaso offer
A story from Corriere di Torino in Italy now claims that Spurs are set to make a bid for Juventus No.27 Andrea Cambiaso.
The Italy international enjoyed a tremendous 2023/24 campaign with the Italian giants, scoring three goals while also providing six assists in 39 appearances from wing-back.
As a result of Cambiaso’s performances, Corriere di Torino believe Tottenham are ready to make a €40m (£34m) bid – although the Italian news outlet add that Aston Villa are also preparing the same offer.
Juventus find themselves in a strong negotiating position – however – as the Italian has a contract at the Allianz Stadium which runs until July 2027.
Spurs could sign the new Paolo Maldini
Cambiaso is yet to become a household name in football, so a comparison to a better known footballer might help provide an idea of how the 24-year-old plays.
Interestingly, the Tottenham target has been likened to Maldini by AC Milan legend Mauro Tassotti – mainly due to his ability to use both feet to a high level, as well as his physicality.
Tassotti told Tutto Mercato Web: “I was immediately struck by Andrea’s ability to play both left and right, above all his ability to kick with both feet.
“I haven’t yet understood whether he is right or left footed. In this sense, he is similar to Paolo Maldini who, however, was much more powerful from a physical standpoint, had incredible charisma and was also very strong defensively, so much so that he ended his career as a centre-back.”
Cambiaso can play on the right or left of defence, so he could also help Postecoglou replace Emerson Royal – a player who is up for sale this summer, according to the Telegraph.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Cambiaso could be Tottenham’s first signing of the summer.
