Some at Manchester United are not convinced that one manager Dan Ashworth is a big admirer of would have the right credentials to succeed Erik ten Hag amid doubts over the Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford.

It appears that Erik ten Hag is fighting a losing battle in trying to prove that he remains the right man to try and take United back into the title picture in the Premier League.

Manchester United currently find themselves eighth in the table after losing 4-0 to Crystal Palace on Monday night, and they have not beaten a team outside the bottom six in the top-flight since facing Aston Villa in mid-February.

Some at Manchester United have reservations about Graham Potter

I News reports that ten Hag is set to be given the chance to see out the season, but there are real doubts over whether he will still be in charge heading into the next campaign.

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly seen by many at Old Trafford as the leading candidate, with the German set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, I News suggests that Graham Potter and Ruben Amorim could also be on the radar.

Dan Ashworth – who is being targeted for a director of football role – knows Potter from his time at Brighton, but the report claims that there are some reservations amongst some at Manchester United over whether the 48-year-old would be the right man to take over if ten Hag leaves.

Chelsea spell may act as a warning

Potter has been out of work since leaving Chelsea last year. Obviously, his time at Stamford Bridge did nothing for his managerial stock, but both Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino had struggled since the new owners came in, so it is hard to be too critical of the Englishman’s tenure.

Having said that, Manchester United do not appear to be in a good place right now, with Chelsea actually ahead of United on goal difference currently.

So it would arguably be a gamble to hand Potter the task of succeeding where ten Hag has, so far, not been able to.
