West Ham now want to sign another player who suffered relegation from the Premier League last season – as the Hammers also close in on a deal for Sheffield United No.18 Wes Foderingham.

The east Londoners are close to signing the 33-year-old on a free transfer as Julen Lopetegui targets an experienced glovesman to deputise for Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski.

That is according to The Athletic.

Now, West Ham are looking to sign another player who was relegated to the Championship in 2023/24…

West Ham want Maxime Esteve

A story by L’Equipe in France now claims that West Ham want to sign Burnley No.33 Maxime Esteve.

The Frenchman moved to Turf Moor from Montpellier in a €12m (£10m) January deal, but despite some impressive performances, he could not prevent the Clarets from going down.

Esteve only won two of his 16 Premier League games.

Now – however – West Ham are looking to give the central defender an immediate route back into the Premier League.

L’Equipe believe the Irons have already taken initial steps to sign Esteve from Burnley by opening talks to secure his signature, while Everton have also made a move for the 22-year-old.

However, the Toffees currently have financial problems, so West Ham are seemingly in a stronger position to sign the France U23 international this summer.

Frenchman could replace Nayef Aguerd

West Ham’s decision to open talks with Burnley over Esteve comes at an interesting time.

A story from the Guardian states that West Ham have now put Nayef Aguerd up for sale following a tough 2023/24 campaign for the Morocco international.

Therefore, it seems entirely possible that Esteve is being lined up to replace the West Ham No.27 this summer, and ultimately look to dislodge Kurt Zouma or Konstantinos Mavropanos from the starting XI.

That would make sense for Lopetegui, as Esteve is still just 22 and would benefit from more experience in the Premier League, without having to be immediately relied on as a regular starter.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as West Ham eye reinforcements.
