Real Madrid forward Joselu expressed his apologies to the Santiago Bernabeu crowd after scoring in the victory against Napoli.
Despite initially trailing 1-0 due to Giovanni Simeone’s goal, Real managed to turn the score around before halftime. Rodrygo Goes and Jude Bellingham netted goals, with the latter scoring his 15th goal in 16 games for Los Blancos.
Napoli leveled the match early in the second half, courtesy of former Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
However, Real Madrid regained the lead in the 84th minute when 19-year-old Argentine youngster Nico Paz, who came off the bench, scored.
Joselu, also a substitute, secured the victory in stoppage time. But his actions after scoring were unexpected.
Instead of expressing sheer joy after finding the net, the former Newcastle and Stoke player performed a praying gesture towards the fans.
It seemed like Joselu’s gesture was an apology of sorts, as he seemed aware that he had missed some earlier opportunities.
Bellingham, who provided a delightful outside-of-the-boot cross for Joselu’s goal, displayed his sportsmanship by urging Joselu toward the fans behind the goal to receive a special ovation.
Joselu netted 36 goals while playing for Alaves before registering 17 goals in 37 matches during his single season with Espanyol, a campaign that saw the team relegated to the second tier.
Recruited on loan as a substitute for Karim Benzema, Joselu provides Real Madrid with the option to acquire him permanently at the season’s end.
So far, he has scored six goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.
