There’s nowhere to hide as a shot-stopper in the Premier League. Goalkeepers are only as good as their previous action. A high-profile error is capable of a stock crash, with reputations only earned after months of reliability.

Alphonse Areola has been a dependable figure for West Ham United since usurping Lukasz Fabianski as the club’s number one. A more ‘modern’ goalkeeper than his Polish teammate, Areola also excels at the fundamentals.

The Frenchman didn’t exactly enjoy the best of starts to 2024/25 with Aston Villa rocking up at the London Stadium and walking away with all three points, but Areola was superb last season. He recorded the third-most saves in the division as well as the third-highest save percentage among the league’s starting goalkeepers.

Leno was responsible for a dangerous giveaway or two but was also on hand to deny Manchester United after they regained possession high up the pitch. There are few who boast superior reflexes than the German.

Neto was crucial for Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth last season as they overcame a tough start to enjoy a secure mid-table finish.

A consistent performer, the former Barcelona goalkeeper helped the Cherries to a point on Matchday 1 by making a league-high seven saves. His supreme shot-stopping ability kept Iraola’s side in the game at the City Ground before Antoine Semenyo struck a late equaliser.

A maverick goalkeeper with an utterly unique style, Andre Onana is as proficient at looking a little bit silly as he is at pulling off the spectacular.

The Cameroonian star bounced back impressively after a tough start to his Man Utd career and enjoyed a fairly quiet opening night thanks to Fulham’s inability to work an opening having been gifted plenty of opportunities on the counter-attack.

With Premier League officials clamping down on blocking and obstruction from set-pieces, expect Guglielmo Vicario to enjoy an error-free sophomore season.

The Italian struggled most when he was forced into contact and teams started to bully the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper into concessions. Vicario was otherwise brilliant in year one, with Ange Postecoglou’s high-risk style ensuring he was always busy.

Ederson remains at Manchester City despite interest from Saudi Arabia and the Brazilian started his season with a clean sheet away at Chelsea.

The Brazilian was fortunate Nicolas Jackson was offside when he spilt a fairly tame shot into his path, but Ederson was otherwise untroubled at Stamford Bridge as he recorded three saves. His distribution remains unrivalled.

Emiliano Martinez once again starred for Argentina over the summer as their remarkable run at major tournaments continued.

The ultimate s**thouse is a paramount figure for Unai Emery’s Villans, although a successful penalty denied him his first clean sheet of the season on Matchday 1 having recorded three saves to help Villa claim all three points at West Ham.

The reigning Golden Glove holder undoubtedly benefitted from operating behind the stingiest backline in the Premier League last season, but David Raya was made to work for his first clean sheet of 2024/25.

A composed operator who excels in possession, Raya is proficient when claiming the high ball. The Spaniard made an excellent save from Jorgen Strand Larsen during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Wolves.

While Raya earned Golden Glove honours last time out, he did so while making just 46 saves. Alisson, on the contrary, was almost always busy while serving as the last defender of Liverpool’s aggressive defensive line.

The Brazilian, who missed a chunk of the campaign through injury, recorded 83 saves and the second-highest save percentage in the Premier League last term. There are few superior sweepers and perhaps nobody better in one-on-one situations.

Alisson remains the gold standard.
