Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Engages in Discussions Regarding National Team Role

Since his dismissal by Manchester United in November 2021 due to a challenging start to the 2021/22 season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been without a managerial position.

Despite being linked to various roles, including a strong possibility for the Besiktas job in the 2023/24 campaign (eventually filled by Fernando Santos), reports from Fotbollskanalen suggest that Solskjaer is in discussions to potentially become the new head coach of the Swedish men’s national team.

While talks have taken place, the Swedish FA is expected to carefully consider and finalize the appointment in due time.

Despite having a squad featuring notable players like Dejan Kulusevski, Alexander Isak, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Elanga, and Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden fell short of securing a spot at Euro 2024, finishing third in their qualifying group behind Belgium and Austria.

While former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg was initially considered for the Sweden job, an agreement fell through during the winter.

The Swedish FA is now exploring foreign appointments after discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and former Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, currently managing Blackburn Rovers and having previously led Malmo.Solskjaer, though lacking managerial experience in Sweden, has coaching credentials in Nordic football, particularly with Molde in his native Norway.

Recognized for his effective man-management and tactical adjustments during his time at Manchester United, Solskjaer achieved notable success against top rivals, including a commendable record against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Despite not securing a trophy at Old Trafford, he guided the Red Devils to consecutive top-four finishes, a feat unmatched by any United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
