Newcastle United are intensifying its pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window, according to sources.
The Magpies are seeking to bolster their midfield following the season-ending ban of summer signing Sandro Tonali for betting offenses.
Newcastle’s interest in Phillips predates the knowledge of Tonali’s suspension, and intermediaries have reportedly informed the club that Manchester City is open to allowing Phillips to leave in January.
Due to Financial Fair Play concerns, Newcastle prefers an initial loan deal, while Manchester City is open to such an arrangement if it includes a purchase option.
Several clubs, including Aston Villa, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus, have recently inquired about Kalvin Phillips’ situation.
However, Newcastle United is believed to be a compelling option for the 27-year-old midfielder.
Phillips had hoped to prove himself at Manchester City and secure a place in Pep Guardiola’s plans, but it’s increasingly apparent that he may not be part of the club’s long-term vision.
Despite limited playing time at City, Phillips has maintained his spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad. Meanwhile, Newcastle is in discussions with Feyenoord regarding Yankuba Minteh’s loan spell, considering ending it in January.
