Newcastle United climbed to fifth place in the Premier League standings after securing a 1-0 home victory against Manchester United on Saturday night.
Despite having the opportunity to rise to fifth, the Red Devils couldn’t capitalize and were surpassed by the Magpies in the league rankings.
Erik ten Hag’s team put on a subpar performance, leading to a well-deserved defeat, marking the conclusion of their recent successful run in domestic competitions.
Newcastle dominated the early stages, and a mix-up between Diogo Dalot and Andre Onana almost resulted in an own goal, with the defender clearing a loose ball against his arm and narrowly avoiding conceding.
In response, Bruno Fernandes delivered a precise pass to Alejandro Garnacho, whose low shot from a tight angle was saved by Nick Pope.
Andre Onana made his first save of the evening when Kieran Trippier’s ball found Joelinton, and Miguel Almiron’s subsequent effort was palmed away.
The pressure from the hosts continued, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s failed clearance leading to an opportunity for Alexander Isak, whose shot was blocked by Harry Maguire.
Just before halftime, Trippier struck a free-kick off the underside of Onana’s crossbar as Newcastle sought an opening goal.
Shortly after the break, Newcastle broke the deadlock. Trippier’s low cross to the back post found Anthony Gordon, who, having eluded Wan-Bissaka, tapped in a simple goal.
Newcastle came close to a second when Lewis Miley’s shot was blocked off the line by Wan-Bissaka, who was cleared of handball after a VAR check.
Despite being outplayed, Man Utd almost leveled the score when substitute Sergio Reguilon’s volley was acrobatically blocked by Fabian Schar.
In the final minutes of normal time, Man Utd thought they had equalized, but Antony’s offside position led to the goal being disallowed.
After a prolonged period of added time, Newcastle secured the victory, condemning Man Utd to their sixth defeat in 14 Premier League games.
