Rio Ferdinand has shared his prediction regarding whether Erik ten Hag will still be Manchester United boss next season following their disappointing Premier League campaign.

Jonny Evans was not even two years old the last time Manchester United finished lower in the top-flight than this season, with the FA Cup finalists finishing eighth, 31 points off top spot.

United did round off their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Brighton, and they do have a meeting with Manchester City at Wembley to still look forward to. However, Sunday’s performance was not convincing, and few will be tipping Erik ten Hag‘s men to stand any chance against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Of course, this is going to be the first summer in which INEOS have a real influence on what goes on behind the scenes at Old Trafford, and with that, some may be wondering what the future holds for ten Hag.

Rio Ferdinand thinks Erik ten Hag may soon leave Old Trafford

Some suggested some time ago that they would be surprised to see ten Hag still at Manchester United next season.

And speaking on his YouTube channel after the final day of the Premier League season, Rio Ferdinand suggested that he is expecting a change in the dug-out ahead of next year.

“You know what, Man United won today 2-0, but it was a very bad performance, it wasn’t a good performance. The more and more I think about it, win or lose, I don’t think Erik ten Hag will be there come next season,” he said.

“I’m not saying that’s what I want, this is what I believe. I believe that the club are going to look elsewhere.

“I don’t think [winning the FA Cup] changes anything for me in the eyes of INEOS, I’ve not spoken to anyone there, I’m just assuming, this is assumptions, this is what I think.

“The bigger picture is the team hasn’t performed, individuals are performing below par, loads of injuries obviously, I think they’ll look at certain things being handled behind the scenes, players, relationships, but, put injuries aside, the performances have been so bad.”

Chelsea have made contact with Manchester United managerial target

Obviously, the big question facing United if they do decide to get rid of ten Hag is who they replace him with, as Manchester United have gone down a number of paths over the last decade.

It does appear that they are putting stronger foundations in place behind the scenes, which should help in the coming years. But INEOS obviously only have one go at their first managerial appointment.

Thomas Tuchel has been tipped to be a favourite for Manchester United. But they may have to act quickly if they want another manager on their radar, with Chelsea making contact with the representatives of Kieran McKenna.

Their ability to land one of their top managerial targets may perhaps have a crucial role in deciding whether they stand by ten Hag this summer.
