Talks broke down over United’s insistence on a £50 million obligation to buy. Expensive January signings may be limited in Saudi Arabia, but a renewed push for overseas talent is expected in the summer, making Antony and Sancho top transfer prospects.

Director of football John Murtough, having met Saudi officials at the Club World Cup, is laying the groundwork for future transfers.

While Raphael Varane may leave Old Trafford this summer, an extension on reduced terms is possible.

The 30-year-old expressed a desire to end his career at United, Real Madrid, or Lens, but Saudi officials are optimistic about luring him away from Europe.
