Young Chelsea defender Levi Colwill netted his inaugural senior goal with a brilliant header, extending his team’s lead against former club Brighton on Sunday.
In a crucial Premier League encounter, Colwill’s goal played a pivotal role as Chelsea secured a 3-2 victory, earning three crucial points.
Immediately after scoring, the 20-year-old displayed intense emotions during his exuberant celebration, quickly regaining composure out of respect for Brighton, where he had a loan stint during the 2022-23 season.
Addressing the media post-match, the English defender provided insight into his celebration, which has gained attention as ‘meme-worthy’ on social media.
Colwill expressed the significance of the moment, stating, “This moment means everything to me after growing up through the club and academy. It was a lot of emotions after I headed it in. But I wasn’t sure if the referee would give it, and he gave it. I ran off to celebrate my first Premier League goal but then realised it was against my old team, so I needed to show them some respect, which I did.
“Brighton, the fans, and the manager did a lot for me, and I wouldn’t be here without them. I chose not to over-celebrate; it was the least I could do. I am hoping to get many more for Chelsea. I have so much more I need to prove. Hopefully, I can prove how good I can be.”
Having been associated with Chelsea since the age of eight, it was a moment of sheer jubilation for Colwill as he netted his first top-flight goal for his childhood club.
Conversely, Brighton played a pivotal role in elevating him to prominence as a senior Premier League player.
His commendable performances in the 17 Premier League matches with the Seagulls last season caught the attention of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s new manager, leading to Colwill’s retention after his return to the parent club.
Following a crucial victory over the weekend, Pochettino’s Chelsea will seek to carry the momentum into a pivotal Premier League clash against Manchester United on Wednesday.
