The European Court of Justice recently deemed UEFA and FIFA’s attempts to block clubs from participating in breakaway competitions unlawful.

While this doesn’t guarantee approval for the Super League, A22 organizers have presented new proposals, aiming to garner momentum.

Despite support from headline clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, La Liga chief Tebas criticizes the plans, specifically targeting the promise of free match broadcasts.

Tebas asserted, “The miracle of the loaves and fishes was done by Jesus Christ, not by Bernd Reichart [CEO of A22]. There will be no Super League in the short, medium, or long term.” He added, “Legally, it’s not possible.

It’s economically unsustainable. Free football is impossible; it would be an economic failure. I bet 100 dinners that we will not see it in the coming years. And a thousand dinners that it won’t be free.”

Tebas’ remarks follow statements from Barcelona and Madrid reinforcing their commitment to the Super League.

Barcelona stated, “As a key driver of the Super League project, FC Barcelona believes the verdict opens avenues for a new elite football competition in Europe, challenging the monopoly over the football world. We aim to initiate discussions on the future direction of European competitions.”

Madrid’s statement, welcomed by President Florentino Perez, expressed, “At Real Madrid, we applaud the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union, ensuring our principles, values, and freedoms.

This historic ruling signifies that European club football will no longer be a monopoly. Clubs now have control over their destiny, with the right to propose and promote modernized European competitions that engage fans worldwide.

Today, the triumph of European freedoms resonates, and football, along with its fans, emerges victorious.”
