Andy Cole has revealed the reason why he never got on with Teddy Sheringham at Manchester United.

Cole was a prolific Premier League striker and enjoyed great success at United under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Nottingham-born forward netted 121 goals in 275 games for the Red Devils, winning five Premier League titles.

Though, he never got on with his teammate Sheringham and he’s just revealed why in a recent interview.

Andy Cole said the bad relationship with Teddy Sheringham started on England duty

Speaking on Stick to Football, Cole noted that his poor relationship with the former Tottenham Hotspur man started on England duty.

“It started when I made my England debut. He just for whatever reason snubbed me, he didn’t shake my hand on my debut,” the 52-year-old said.

“I was mortified, I was disappointed. As far as I was concerned, you’re a senior pro, I always watch and whenever someone is coming on, they make a massive beeline for whoever is coming on.

“When he joined Man United I was like alright I’ll get on with you. I remember first day of pre-season the boys couldn’t stop laughing at me. Because they knew.”

Cole appeared to suggest that Sheringham would undermine ability, referring back to a pre-season game.

“And I came in, pre-season, playing a game and you know when someone is trying to coach you into positions. I was like I’ve been at United a minute now, I know what I’m doing. So I let him know, don’t try and coach me into positions, I’ve been at Man United.”

The final straw between Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham

Cole recalls the final straw of their relationship when The Red Devils drew at home to Bolton Wanderers.

“And the final straw for me was at Bolton, we drew 1-1 at Old Trafford and they scored a late goal and he said ‘that’s your fault, that’. So I said to myself let’s just get to full time now, usually I was one of the last off the pitch, that day I was one of the first.”

The former Newcastle ace admitted he got into a physical altercation with Sherringham in the tunnel after the game.

“I ran down the tunnel and wait for him to come in. We’ve had a bit of a set to, and I have just got about got my arm back. And peacemaker [Roy Keane] came in for about 30 seconds, and then turned it on its head.

“You were trying to break it up and then got involved yourself!”
