Heung-min Son has made an admission about his own form after Tottenham Hotspur suffered their fourth defeat in a row on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side missed the chance to put some pressure on Aston Villa in the race to finish in the top-four, with Liverpool flying into a 4-0 lead inside the first hour at Anfield at the weekend.

Tottenham did threaten to set up a dramatic finish, with Richarlison and Heung-min Son both scoring for the visitors on Merseyside. However, there was to be no incredible comeback, and Spurs are now dealing with their longest losing run in 20 years.

Speaking in an interview posted on X, Son admitted that while he will look to demand more from those around him in his role as captain, he also needs to ask questions of himself following this recent run.

“As captain, I’m also not good enough so I want to always push as hard as possible because this means something for me, wearing this shirt and also for everybody,” he said.

“So when you play in the Premier League and you’re also young or an experienced player, it doesn’t matter, when you put the shirt on, you’ve got to give everything.”

Son has had an amazing season, in truth, with 17 goals and nine assists in the Premier League. That has perhaps been overlooked given that the South Korean has scored just three goals in his last eight appearances.

What has also been largely forgotten is just how much better Son has been this season compared to last year. His tally of 10 league goals last term arguably flattered the 32-year-old who really struggled to find any sort of consistency.

This campaign should end up being Son’s second best for league goals scored since arriving at Tottenham for £22 million. And had he not gone away on international duty after the turn of year, he may well have been able to rival his tally of 23 goals which won him the golden boot in 2022.

Son is a world-class player so may well demand more of himself, particularly in this recent run, but Tottenham fans know just how important he remains to their fortunes – even when not quite at his best.
