Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has called for an increased representation of home-based players in the national team.
The provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations included only three local players, a decision that left Ighalo disappointed.
He emphasized the need for greater inclusion of homegrown talent in future team selections.
“I don’t think is right not to invite home base players, this is a 40 man list, at least 7 to 5 players should be on the list to encourage them, not inviting them means, you don’t focus on the league,” Ighalo told Oma Sports.
In the previous Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Cameroon, the Super Eagles squad featured only one home-based player, John Noble.
It is anticipated that at least one of the three goalkeepers from the provisional list will secure a spot in the final squad for AFCON 2023.
