Wayne Rooney has admitted he ‘felt terrible’ after what he said to former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen in training.

Rene Meulensteen worked alongside Wayne Rooney for a total of seven years as a technical coach and then Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant.

The Dutchman left Manchester United alongside Ferguson in 2013 after being the Scotsman’s right-hand man from 2008 onwards.

It’s no secret that United had a host of top players during this period but Rooney was among the best in world football.

Despite his brilliance, Rooney was known to lose his cool at times and it would appear Meulensteen was on the receiving end of his temper in training once.

Rooney says he ‘felt terrible’ after Rene Meulensteen incident in training

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Rooney was asked about the worst thing he ever said to a coach. 

The United legend reflected on an incident involving Meulensteen and admitted he felt bad after learning the coach’s family attended the training session. 

“There was one with Rene which was bad and I felt terrible,” Rooney admitted. “I went for him big time and the manager pulled me into his office after the session and there were a few people watching in training.

“It was Rene’s wife and kids, I had no idea, and I felt so bad.”

Meulensteen’s career since leaving Man United

After heading out the door alongside Ferguson in 2013, Meulensteen has enjoyed spells at Anzhi, Fulham, Maccabi Haifa and Kerala Blasters. 

His spell at Craven Cottage was a forgettable one as he left after just two months in charge in February 2014.

The Dutchman is now working with the Australian national team as an assistant manager once again after landing the role in 2018.
