Alan Shearer has now shared his prediction for next season after watching Arsenal finish second best to Manchester City yesterday.

Despite eventually getting their own job done at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta’s side ultimately didn’t receive the favour they needed from West Ham United in Manchester.

Phil Foden inspired a win without too much jeopardy at the Etihad, and Man City won quite comfortably as almost every Arsenal fan expected.

Nonetheless, it was still a brilliant campaign by the Gunners who will be proud of their efforts, a clear improvement on last season.

And as Arteta was quick to point out recently, his team made club ‘history’, not just progress this year.

And when it comes to next, it really does feel as if Arsenal have the foundation in place to deliver serious silverware – when there will perhaps be more pressure to do so.

That being said, Alan Shearer has just shared his thoughts on Arsenal’s season, the signings they could need, and where they might then finish.

Shearer was speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast and admitted that Arsenal will be hurting right now.

However, the pundit seemed optimistic that Arteta only needed to make small adjustments over the summer in order to go one step further.

Shearer said: “It’ll hurt them, there’s no doubt, because that’s the prize that they wanted. But I think they have done really, really well. 

“They are improving. If they can get another couple of players in, particularly a main centre forward, then they will go again next year. 

“They have to somehow use the hurt they are feeling and use it as a positive.”

Unless Arsenal spring a surprise and sell Gabriel Jesus this summer, which there has been some noise about, then a new striker shouldn’t be the priority.

Yes, a forward like Alexander Isak would take this Arsenal team forward, a player Alan Shearer is known to adore at Newcastle United.

But that would come at the expense of Kai Havertz as a false nine, a position he is fulfilling so well right now.

Arsenal need a new number six who can take the pressure off of Jorginho, regardless of what happens with Thomas Partey’s future.

Micah Richards recently suggested exactly that, saying a striker wasn’t the only signing Arsenal needed.

Arsenal’s goal-scoring hasn’t been an issue in 2024, and it looks like this side have turned a corner in that respect.

Alan Shearer isn’t wrong to suggest Arsenal would benefit from a new striker, but those funds can be better spent to maximise other areas of their performances, particularly in transitions.
