Manchester United have a busy summer ahead of them with uncertainty over who could be in the dugout next term.

Erik ten Hag is facing an uncertain future with the Red Devils, particularly in wake of the devastating 4-0 loss at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Admittedly, a Europa League place is still very much up for grabs for Manchester United via their Premier League finish or by winning the FA Cup.

However, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe making changes at boardroom level, it remains to be seen whether the club will seek to go in a different direction.

One manager said to be on the Manchester United radar is England head coach Gareth Southgate.

Indeed, Foot Mercato have reported Ratcliffe and INEOS are ‘convinced’ that Southgate is the right man the job.

However, the Red Devils have now been warned by Stan Collymore not to go for the Three Lions boss.

Collymore wrote on CaughtOffside: “Forget Gareth Southgate. I know him well.

“He won’t know what’s hit him at United should they go through a bad spell, criticism, and are in the spotlight on a weekly basis – not every few months when there’s an international or tournament on.”

Southgate has certainly played a big part in overhauling the England setup and helping develop a squad that now genuinely looks like they could go all the way in the Euros or World Cup.

However, club football is a completely different proposition to international football, and Southgate hasn’t managed at club level since 2009.

If Manchester United are compelled to sack Ten Hag and can’t get anyone else, then by all means they can try Southgate. But surely it would be better to bring in someone who has recent experience – and success – at club level.
