Girona 630x420 1 Girona granted UEFA green light to host UEFA Champions League games next season

Girona have already clinched a piece of club history this season by qualifying for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League.

The Catalans have held their nerve in the run in, to secure a top four finish, and a spot in Europe’s premier club competition next season.

Girona could still finish second in La Liga in the coming weeks but plans are already being finalised for the longer term.

Despite concerns over their Estadi Montilivi not being up to standard for the Champions League, reports from Marca claim it has been given the OK by UEFA, subject to stadium updates.

The stadium has the smallest capacity in the current Spanish top flight, at 13,400, but that meets UEFA’s 8,000 seated threshold.

However, the club will invest around €1m to improve VIP areas, media zones and transport access.

There will also be safety plans enacted to allow opposition fans to enter the stadium independently as part of the reformatted ‘league style’ Champions League.
