Former England Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson Discloses Cancer Diagnosis

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the former England manager, has shared that he’s been diagnosed with cancer and estimates he has “best case a year” to live.

The 75-year-old, who guided England in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and Euro 2004, received the diagnosis after fainting during a run, stepping away from his sporting director role at Karlstad 11 months ago.

Eriksson expressed his determination to fight the disease as long as possible, acknowledging the uncertainty of the timeline provided by doctors.

“It’s better not to dwell on it. You have to outsmart your mind. I could constantly think about it, sit at home feeling unlucky, and be miserable.

It’s easy to end up in that position, but I choose to focus on the positive aspects and not be consumed by setbacks, even though this is the biggest setback of all.

“It came out of nowhere, and that’s what makes it shocking. I’m not experiencing major pain, but I’ve been diagnosed with a condition that can be slowed down but not operated on. So, it is what it is.”

Eriksson, who achieved success with England in the 2000s and managed prominent clubs like Benfica, Roma, Sampdoria, and Lazio, notably winning the Serie A title with Lazio in 1999/00, reflected on his managerial journey.

Having won 40 of his 67 games with England, he went on to manage various teams, including Manchester City, Mexico, Ivory Coast, and Leicester City after leaving his role with the Three Lions post the 2006 World Cup.
