Two of Barcelona’s most impressive performers this season are both on loan at the club, in the shape of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix.
The Portuguese international duo both arrived in the summer – Cancelo from English champions Manchester City and Felix from La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.
The pair have played prominent roles and Barcelona would like to retain both players.
Barcelona want to keep Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo
TBR Football understands that Manchester City want to sell Cancelo this summer, but Barca want to loan him again.
Cancelo has spent this season on-loan in the Catalan capital, and has been a key performer for Xavi – starting almost every game.
Barca have already indicated that they would like to keep Cancelo and the 29-year-old has no desire to be playing anywhere else.
TBR understands that City are looking to sell Cancelo as they have no desire to bring back to the Etihad – despite the fact he has three-years left on his current deal.
Due to the size of Cancelo’s contract – it means any permanent deal would be substantial, hence Barca’s desire to keep him via another loan.
TBR understands that Cancelo is not the only loan deal that Barca are keen to renew as they also want to keep Joao Felix.
Felix, like Cancelo, is on a season long-loan at the club after arriving from Atletico Madrid.
Like City too, Madrid want to sell Felix – but again the contract situation is difficult as he is contracted to them until 2029. Barca are set to hold talks with Atletico and City in the coming weeks to try and facilitate extensions on both deals.
Jorge Mendes key to deals for Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix
Both players are looked after by super agent Jorge Mendes – who facilitated the original moves, and Barca president Joan Laporta confirmed they would be using him again to try and push through deals for next season.
“I think they will continue,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo when asked about Cancelo and Felix in March.
“I hope that Atletico de Madrid will not put any objection to Joao Felix continuing with us and I think that City will not object either.
“We have an agent there who is working on the issue, Jorge Mendes, and he knows our intention to continue with the players.
“What I can’t tell you now, because it will depend a lot on the amounts, is whether we are going to sign them or extend the loan. It will surely be an extension of the transfer, already setting a price.”
