Erik ten Hag emphasizes that Willy Kambwala’s debut for Manchester United was based on his training performances, highlighting the player’s merit.
In his surprising debut for Manchester United during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against West Ham United, Willy Kambwala, selected in the absence of key defenders, showcased an admirable performance, completing 90% of passes and making three ball recoveries.
Manager Erik ten Hag explained that Kambwala earned his debut based on impressive training performances and notable contributions to the Under-21s team.
“So, starting the season with five center-backs, on Saturday we had three or four sidelined due to illness or injury. Despite this, Willy Kambwala left a positive impression in training and Under-21 games, prompting our decision to field him.
“He demonstrated his capabilities with a solid performance, indicating a bright future. While there’s room for improvement, his potential is evident, and we are pleased with his showing.
“In this game, we witnessed various skills typical of a modern center-back, further reinforcing our satisfaction with his performance.
“As we look ahead to the crucial Boxing Day clash against Aston Villa, Kambwala might find a place on the bench, especially with Raphael Varane expected to return after missing the West Ham game due to illness.
“Hopefully, Raphael Varane will be back. Regarding the rest, including Amad Diallo, we’ll assess their readiness. Amad has been training for two weeks, and they are the ones who might make a return.”
