The 26-year-old, sidelined for Liverpool’s past eight matches due to an unspecified muscle injury and with only two training sessions before the Boxing Day clash at Turf Moor, surprised both fans and medical staff by making it into Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad.
Jota’s faith in Klopp’s decision was rewarded as he emerged from the bench to net Liverpool’s second goal in stoppage time, securing a crucial win that propelled the club back to the summit of the Premier League.
Reflecting on his unexpected return, Jota shared with the club’s official website, “It’s massive, it’s a special feeling.
It was a crazy 24 hours, and I was not expecting to be in this squad list, to be honest.” Despite initially being at home, Jota was called back to join the team for training, and he expressed his determination, saying, “I just felt I needed to do this.”
With his family in the crowd for Christmas, Jota found joy in the win, his goal, and the return to the pitch.
He described it as the “best Christmas gift for everyone here.” Training with the team in the last couple of days, he emphasized the importance of being ready for the unexpected opportunity.
“I was prepared for this moment; it’s the result of our hard work. Experiencing the anticipation of coming on today and returning with a goal is truly special.”
Klopp conceded post-game that Liverpool’s medical team advocated for more training for Jota before his return, but he overruled them, prioritizing what he believed was best for the squad.
“We managed to include him in the squad despite only two training sessions, as the medical team wanted him to have extra training. I insisted he could get that in Burnley,” Klopp disclosed.
“He had that opportunity tonight, and now he can have a proper training session tomorrow, making him ready for Newcastle [on Monday], which is extremely beneficial. A 2-0 victory with no injuries – all positive.”
