Daniel Levy Admits Misjudgment in Mourinho and Conte Appointments at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has candidly admitted that the appointments of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte as head coaches were misjudgments that the club had to reckon with.

After a prosperous five-and-a-half-year reign under Mauricio Pochettino, Levy brought in Mourinho as head coach in November 2019, aiming to transform Spurs from contenders to trophy-winners.

Regrettably, Mourinho couldn’t bring an end to the club’s trophy drought. Although he steered them to the Carabao Cup final in 2021, he was relieved of his duties just a week prior to the final. During his sole full season in charge, Tottenham finished sixth in the Premier League, marking their lowest ranking in six years.

Tottenham originally aspired to appoint Antonio Conte as Mourinho’s successor in the summer of 2021.

However, Conte needed a sabbatical after leaving Inter Milan. When Nuno Espirito Santo, Conte’s eventual replacement, faced an early-season exit in 2021/22, Conte was enlisted.

Conte remarkably guided Tottenham to a surprising top-four finish in his debut season, setting high expectations for the 2022/23 campaign. Yet, disappointingly, Spurs were prematurely eliminated from all cup competitions, culminating in an eighth-place finish in the Premier League and Conte’s departure in March.

Despite the recruitment of two managers renowned for their swift trophy-winning abilities, Tottenham’s quest for a major trophy has endured since 2008.

Levy addressed these concerns during a fan forum event, confessing that the “win-now” managerial approach with Mourinho and Conte was an unfortunate misjudgment. He subsequently appointed Ange Postecoglou as the current manager in June.

Levy acknowledged, “I share the same desire for victory as everyone else. The frustration of not securing titles, along with the expectations from certain players and a substantial section of the fan base demanding victory, significant spending, and star managers, had an impact on me.”

He also acknowledged that the club’s strategy had shifted, initially favoring “trophy managers” but later realizing the need to learn from these experiences.

Levy concluded, “Both Mourinho and Conte are exceptional managers, but they may not have been the ideal fit for this club. We adhere to a specific style of play, and if that necessitates a more patient approach to success, it may indeed be the right course. In my view, bringing in Ange was a precisely considered decision.”

In an interview with Bloomberg, Levy elaborated on his perspective, recognizing the divergence in Mourinho’s and Conte’s managerial approaches and accepting his own misjudgment. He highlighted the remarkable progress made under Mauricio Pochettino and the need for a fresh direction when the club faced mounting frustration.
