Chelsea Coach Mauricio Pochettino Labels Newcastle Defeat as ‘Our Worst Game of the Season’

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed strong criticism of his team’s performance following their defeat to Newcastle United.

Despite the Blues entering the match with confidence after a draw with Manchester City and a 4-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, their defense crumbled, leading to a 4-1 loss against the Magpies. The challenging game also saw Chelsea finishing with 10 players after Reece James received a red card in the 73rd minute.

Addressing the disappointing outcome in a post-match interview with Premier League Productions, Pochettino labeled it as Chelsea’s worst performance of the season. Despite being suspended and watching from the directors’ box, he voiced his frustration, stating, “It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands. We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy.”

Pochettino emphasized the collective responsibility of the team, refusing to solely blame the players. He acknowledged the need to comprehend the required level of competition and learn from the situation.

The manager expressed disappointment in the team’s failure to demonstrate commitment to the match’s significance, saying, “We didn’t show that we were playing for something important.”

The defeat left Chelsea in 10th place, missing an opportunity to close the gap on Newcastle, who now sit four points ahead in sixth place. Depending on the outcome of Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Aston Villa, Chelsea could find themselves trailing by as many as 13 points behind fourth place in the Premier League.
