Bayer Leverkusen set €50m asking price on Atletico Madrid defensive target

Atletico Madrid are on the hunt for new defenders, as Diego Simeone targets an overhaul of his squad on the back of a disappointing 2023-24 season. Mario Hermoso’s departure means that a left-sided centre-back is wanted, and one of the targets identified by sporting director Andrea Berta is Piero Hincapie.

Hincapie had a fantastic season with Bayer Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga for the first time – and undefeated, to go with that. The 22-year-old is well-liked within the offices at Los Colchoneros, although they will likely find it difficult to get a deal done this summer.

According to Bild (via Diario AS), Leverkusen are open to selling Hincapie, although they have set a steep asking price: €50m. Atleti will find it difficult to reach that amount because of their financial woes, and especially so when Real Sociedad’s Robin Le Normand appears to be the top defensive target.

Hincapie would be a top-class signing for Atletico Madrid, although it would be surprising if they managed to get a deal done with Leverkusen due to the asking price set. Other targets may need to be thought about as a result.
