Even though Oriol Romeu was brought in during the summer window to fill the void left by Sergio Busquets’ departure, Barcelona are already on the lookout for candidates to be inforce the position in the long run.
And, one player who appears to be high on the list of candidates is Royal Antwerp starlet Arthur Vermeeren.
The 18-year-old is a talented young midfielder that the Catalans have already scouted on several occasions and see as an option for the pivot midfield position.
Barcelona held talks with Antwerp for Vermeeren
In fact, Gabriel Sans of Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona have even held talks with Royal Antwerp about Vermeeren recently.
The two teams met in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week, with the Catalan giants thrashing the Belgian champions 5-0 at home in Montjuic.
Prior to the game, though, during the customary lunch involving officials from both clubs, the topic of Vermeeren was broached.
The report states that Barcelona director Deco and his Royal Antwerp counterpart Marc Overmars discussed the 18-year-old midfield prospect on Tuesday.
But there was no talk regarding the financial aspects of the deal and the discussions were largely centred around the sporting matters.
Barcelona to continue scouting Vermeeren
As mentioned earlier, Barcelona have already scouted Vermeeren on several occasions. They got a much closer look at him this week during the game at Montjuic.
However, the youngster did not have the best of performances and was overwhelmed by Barça’s brilliance on the night, just like the rest of the Royal Antwerp side.
But the Blaugrana intend to keep scouting Vermeeren in the coming weeks and months, while they will get another good look at him during the reverse fixture in the UCL in December.
Apart from that, the La Liga champions also wish to speak to his agent to get an idea of what the midfielder’s future plans and ambitions are.
