Aston Villa is standing firm on their decision to rebuff any offers for midfielder Douglas Luiz in the upcoming January transfer window, despite strong interest from top clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
Although Arsenal previously failed with three bids for Luiz in 2022, they continue to track the Brazilian player, who has shown exceptional form this season under manager Unai Emery, aiding Villa’s ascent as serious contenders for a top-four finish.
Reports reveal Manchester City’s interest in Luiz, who was initially signed by City in 2017 from Vasco da Gama but was immediately loaned out to Girona for two years before being permanently transferred to Villa for approximately £15 million.
Liverpool has also indicated their interest in Luiz, but there’s no indication that a move is likely to materialize, despite the player’s impressive performances. Emery, Villa’s manager, expressed his satisfaction with Luiz’s progress and commitment, affirming his desire to retain the player.
“His performance today was incredible, and I want to keep him. He’s happy with us, and I’m very pleased with his development and dedication,” said Emery after Villa’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Aston Villa has made it crystal clear to all potential suitors that Douglas Luiz is off the market, firmly stating that any attempts to acquire the Brazilian midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window will be outright dismissed.
Luiz, an integral figure at Villa with over 150 Premier League appearances, has demonstrated his prowess this season, contributing five goals and two assists, propelling Villa to a strong fourth place in the league with 28 points from 13 matches.
Having committed to a new four-year contract in 2022 following Arsenal’s pursuit, Luiz remains tied to Villa Park until 2026. This prolonged contract duration significantly reduces any pressure on club officials to entertain offers for the player.
Driven by his aspirations to guide Villa into the Champions League and eager to vie for trophies, Luiz is enthusiastic about the club’s chances in the Europa Conference League, where Villa stands among the favorites to claim the title.
