Arsenal will celebrate Christmas as the Premier League leaders after securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday night.

Requiring only a draw to maintain their top spot, Arsenal got off to an ideal start as Gabriel nodded in a goal within three minutes. However, Mohamed Salah’s equalizer in the middle of the first half leveled the playing field.

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the crossbar in a dynamic second half, the teams ultimately settled for a shared outcome.

Arsenal came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening minute, with Bukayo Saka’s cross creating confusion, and Gabriel Jesus’ strike deflected narrowly over the crossbar.

The breakthrough occurred three minutes later when Gabriel leaped highest to head in a free-kick from Martin Odegaard. Despite a tense VAR check, his goal was eventually awarded.

Liverpool, seeking an equalizer, dominated possession, but Arsenal posed a constant threat. Odegaard had a chance from inside the box, narrowly missing the target after some skillful play 20 minutes into the game.

A significant handball shout against Odegaard went unanswered, as he slipped while defending Salah, and VAR opted not to intervene.

However, Liverpool managed to level the score just before the half-hour mark when Alexander-Arnold’s excellent delivery found Salah. The forward cut inside Oleksandr Zinchenko and unleashed a shot into David Raya’s top corner.

Five minutes before halftime, Gabriel Martinelli missed an opportunity after Alisson denied Saka in a one-on-one situation, failing to hit the target.

The second half maintained a lively pace, with substitute Joe Gomez coming close to scoring a spectacular goal, curling a beautiful shot just wide of Raya’s far post.

Harvey Elliott’s effort narrowly missed the target, and Alexander-Arnold struck the crossbar in a four-on-one counter, but no more goals were scored as Arsenal and Liverpool settled for a point.
