Arsenal is reportedly keen on Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, as confirmed by Mikel Arteta, who states the club is ready to make investments in the upcoming January transfer window.
Arsenal, having continued their progress from last season, find themselves in the position of genuine title contenders.
They held the top spot in the table leading up to Christmas, although Liverpool’s victory over Burnley subsequently placed them at the summit on Boxing Day.
Arsenal faces the challenge of reclaiming the top spot, but injuries and suspensions have left Arteta with missing key players like Partey, Vieira, Timber, Tomiyasu, and the suspended Havertz.
Matthijs de Ligt of Bayern Munich is a long-term defensive target, although a January move is unlikely due to his recent contract and high transfer cost.
Arteta expressed willingness to make a move in the transfer window if the right opportunity arises, recognizing the impact of injuries to versatile players like Timber and Tomiyasu who can cover various defensive positions.
Arteta acknowledges the current challenges, citing a shortage of players in key positions over the past six weeks, compounded by long-term injuries to versatile players.
Despite uncertainties around player returns and squad conditions, Arteta expressed preparedness for the unpredictable and fast-shifting January transfer market. Arsenal is exploring options to improve the squad, recognizing the importance of being open to strengthening if necessary.
Notably, Arsenal made significant summer signings, including the club-record £105m deal for Declan Rice, aiming to build on the previous season’s runner-up finish in the Premier League.
