Andre Onana’s Potential AFCON Return Offers Boost to Manchester United

“The goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has been included in Cameroon’s squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament following the end of his exile from the national team.

Despite Cameroon being considered favorites for success at AFCON, their campaign commences on January 15 with a match against Guinea.

According to ESPN, Onana is currently in discussions with the Cameroonian FA regarding the possibility of delaying his call-up until after Manchester United’s FA Cup third-round clash on January 8, where they are set to face League One side Wigan Athletic.

Before the AFCON tournament, Cameroon is scheduled for a pre-tournament training camp in Saudi Arabia in early January, featuring a friendly against Zambia.

Following the match against Guinea, Cameroon will compete against Gambia and the formidable Senegal in the remaining group stage fixtures.”

“With the AFCON final set for February 11, Onana’s absence could impact a maximum of seven Manchester United matches.

Erik ten Hag’s team is set to host Premier League top-four contenders Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on January 14, followed by fixtures against Wolves, West Ham United, and Aston Villa at the beginning of February.

Onana’s potential absence would encompass any FA Cup third-round replay against Wigan, as well as a fourth-round tie and an additional replay if required.

In Onana’s stead, Erik ten Hag is likely to turn to fellow summer signing Altay Bayindir. Despite joining United from Fenerbahce, the Turkish international has yet to make an appearance for the club.”
