Leroy Sane’s early goal had set the tone for Bayern, with Onana’s unfortunate mishap allowing the ball to slip under him. This marked Onana’s 14th goal conceded in just six games as United’s goalkeeper this season.

After the match, Onana made a special request for a televised interview where he openly admitted his error and acknowledged his below-par performance in the ongoing season. Speaking to TNT Sports, Onana stated, “It’s tough to lose this way, especially after our strong start. I take full responsibility for my mistake, which disrupted our control of the game.”

He continued, “This situation is challenging, especially for me, as I feel responsible for the team’s setback. While the team performed admirably, it was ultimately my mistake that prevented us from winning. We didn’t emerge victorious today due to my error. It’s the life of a goalkeeper; we must learn, remain resilient, and move forward, even in difficult circumstances.”

Onana also recognized the importance of self-improvement, saying, “I have much to prove. My initial performances in Manchester have fallen short of my expectations. Today’s game was among my worst. It’s tough because we’re a prestigious club with ambitions of winning everything. This was a golden opportunity to recover from our ongoing challenges. Times are tough, but we must stay united and continue working diligently.”

Later, in an interview with CBS Sports, Onana reiterated his responsibility: “Mistakes are inevitable for a goalkeeper. I must shoulder the blame; we lost this game because of me. Such setbacks occur in life, but I believe that my mistake cost us the victory.”

Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, swiftly came to Onana’s defense, emphasizing that the blame shouldn’t fall solely on the goalkeeper. Fernandes stated, “Andre is an exceptional goalkeeper who consistently earns us points with crucial saves. He shouldn’t carry the burden of this loss; as a team, we share the responsibility, and together, we’ll overcome this challenging period.”

Looking ahead, Onana and Manchester United prepare for their upcoming fixture against Burnley on Saturday. Following that, they face Crystal Palace before resuming their Champions League campaign with a match against Galatasaray.
