Tottenham Hotspur are in the worst period of their season and it has all come at the wrong time.

Ange Postecoglou’s side could have been well on course to securing Champions League football by now, but instead, they have lost four Premier League games on the bounce.

That included Tottenham deservedly losing 4-2 to Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield.

This performance and result came only days after Spurs suffered two London derby defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal.

In all of these games, Ange Postecoglou has chopped and changed his team, especially the forward areas and the middle of the park.

It’s pretty clear that the recently-appointed Tottenham boss is still trying to find his best formula.

One thing is for sure, he hasn’t been shy to bench some of his top stars, including James Maddison for the last two matches.

When Maddison remained on the bench for the trip to Anfield, Jermain Defoe admitted that he would be ‘unhappy’ with his manager, as he told Premier League Productions (05/05/24 at 4:20 pm).

The former striker labelled the playmaker as Tottenham’s ‘biggest signing’ following his transfer from Leicester City in the summer and how he now finds himself in an unfortunate situation.

“He’s probably our biggest signing,” said Defoe. “Before his injury, he was fantastic and brilliant. Everything we did well, he was involved in.

“Of course, he’s not going to be happy (to be benched). When you come back from injury and you try to get back to the level from before, it takes time.

“But the fact that he isn’t playing, and with the Euros, that will be at the back of his mind, of course, he isn’t going to be happy.”

During the early part of the season, Maddison was flying and looking like one of the signings of the season.

Up until his ankle injury in November, he had three goals and five assists.

But since returning from the treatment room, the Euro 2024 hopeful has only scored one goal and supplied two assists.

That early form from Maddison has gone out of the window and he can’t argue against sitting on the bench.

But with only three games remaining – Burnley and Manchester City at home, then Sheffield United away, you feel he has to probably start at least one of those matches.
