Jose Mourinho Considering Surprising Return to Manchester United

Currently without a job following his departure from Roma, Jose Mourinho appears to be actively seeking a return to football.

Reports suggest the 61-year-old is expressing a strong desire to take charge at Old Trafford for the second time, with a friend of Mourinho’s indicating he sees it as “unfinished business” from his first spell.

The former Chelsea boss is said to be on a mission to become the manager of Manchester United again if the opportunity arises in the future.

However, given Erik ten Hag’s current tenure, optimism among fans, and the potential influence of INEOS in sporting operations, such a return seems unlikely in the near term.

Jose Mourinho became Manchester United’s third permanent manager in 2016, succeeding Louis van Gaal after the club’s FA Cup victory.

His tenure brought notable signings like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba, resulting in Carabao Cup and Europa League triumphs in his debut season.

Despite a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Premier League, Mourinho led United to a second-place finish in 2017/18, their highest since the Ferguson era.

This achievement remains unmatched except by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020/21 and stands as the only time United reached 80 points in the last decade.

However, Mourinho’s reign ended abruptly in the following season due to internal issues, including challenges in securing key transfer targets.

Despite a promising start to the 2018/19 season, a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool marked the end of his tenure, highlighting a decline after the successes of the previous campaign.
