“The Gambia National Football Team, set to participate in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations,
faced a life-threatening situation as their Air Cote d’Ivoire flight to Ivory Coast was abruptly aborted.
Coach Tom Saintfiet revealed that a lack of oxygen on the plane led to players and delegation members falling asleep, with some unable to be awakened.
The pilot’s quick decision to return likely averted a potential disaster, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
While officials cited a pressurization problem, Saintfiet suggested the passengers could have faced carbon monoxide poisoning.
Despite the harrowing experience, the team, recovering from headaches and dizziness, opted to train upon their return to Banjul.”
